Perched on the mountain side overlooking the river, these twin hand crafted wooden cabins have great panoramic views over the valley.
4km's from the center of Vilcabamba the Eagles Nest has two cabins, a main bedroom & a bedroom/living room, each with a balcony overlooking the lush valley; it has an open air kitchen with a 4 burner stove, a water filter, basic pots and utensils; a 24hr hot shower; and an outdoor sitting space.It is a short uphill walk to the cabins. Please check our other cabins.
Integrated into the midst of a typical rural Andean community we offer a unique cultural opportunity to enjoy the local color of traditional country life, while hiking the best trails around Vilcabamba; or just kick back, relax and go back in time, in a truly natural retreat.

Humming birds in the bedroom
The lodge is ideally located up a hillside, about 4 kilometres west of Vilcabamba. There’s a real sense of escape from the outside world, especially when you have humming birds flit into your bedroom and saffron finches hop into your kitchen. Long bracing walks aplenty too. Sarah and Charlie were extremely helpful throughout the week, but the first day was a muddle of temperamental showers, requests for Wi-Fi codes, etc. This could have been avoided. And unfortunately, the noise from a construction project below, which although partially drowned out by the river, remained a background presence during our stay.

Paradise!
We stayed one week with Sarah and Charlie in the Eagle's nest. It was a magical and peaceful experience! We fell in love with Vilcabamba. Sarah and Charlie are amazing and kind hosts that are very helpful with whatever you may need.
The river, crickets and birds lull you to sleep each night and it is like you are living in a more modern treehouse. It was everything I expected and more! I spent a lot of time reading in the hammock and exploring the nearby trails. Beauty was everywhere. We went into town a bit and visited the locals. Everyone is so welcoming and kind.
Amazing hosts and wonderful stay. I will be back!!

Excellent retreat
The Eagles Nest is actually three buildings connected with short walkways. The views from all of them are part of what makes Charlie's Cabinas so amazing. The Eagles Nest is short walk up the hill from the end of the drivable road, right at the edge of the national park.
The two cabins with beds are small and have verandas. The third building is open kitchen and bathroom. A great setup in theist of a green property.
Despite the location internet is functioning well and Charlie and Sarah are very friendly and helpful. Having spent a very longtime in the area already much history, local information and hiking tips are available from them.
I stayed for a month, looking for a quiet environment to write and soak up green nature. The Eagles Nest provided the perfect answer, including the soothing sound of the little river below.

About the neighborhood
While Vilcabamba has lost the feel of the quaint Andean village it once was, the real gem of Vilcabamba, the countryside, with it's stunning scenery and incredible biodiversity remains as beautiful as ever.
Nestled in the foothills of the Podocarpus National Park, Cabañas Rio Yambala is the ideal spot to enjoy Vilcabamba's picture-book valleys & clear mountain rivers.
Local trails lead to swim holes along the river, to local beauty spots & waterfalls, or into the heart of the mountains, to the edge of the cloud forest and the Podocarpus National Park - Vilcabamba's best spot for hiking, horse trekking & birding!
Getting around
We are 4 km's from the center of Vilcabamba, in the upper reaches of the valley, reached by a dirt road. There are plenty of stores and restaurants in Vilcabamba but not much further out, so it is advisable to eat or get a few groceries before coming up if you are arriving late.
It is a beautiful and culturally interesting 45 minute to 1 hour walk to Vilcabamba, or a 15 minute $3.50 taxi ride. We can call a taxi for you whenever you need one.
As the instigators of eco-tourism in Vilcabamba we have a wealth of knowldege about hiking and horsetrecking in the area, birding, visiting the Podocarpus National Park and general activities in the area.
How to get there
- From Vilcabamba get a taxi to "Charlie's cabañas Rio Yambala". The Taxi will drop you at our bridge. Cross the bridge, turn right and follow the signs up to our house and the cabins. It is a short uphill walk.
- If you call us just before leaving Vilcabamba we can come down and meet you at the bridge.
It is quite easy to phone, there are "Cabinas" (phone booths) opposite the taxi stand, just make the call then pay with cash.
If you arrive after dark or want help bringing your luggage up then you should definitely call first.
From AIRPORT/LOJA to CABINS
We can send a taxi (at cost) to pick you up in Loja or at the Loja airport which is 45 mins from Loja (your taxi driver will call us to meet you at the bridge)

If you need information on getting to Loja or Vilcabamba please let us know where you will be coming from.
