Over 150 years ago a Scottish shepherd turned sheep stealer named James Mackenzie and his dog Friday discovered the perfect hiding place for a whole lot of sheep - the tussock coated plain now known as the Mackenzie basin. Little did Mackenzie and Friday know that their alpine adventures of endurance and evasion would become the stuff of folk legend, inspiring the first settlers in the region to name it after this well-known rogue. Nowadays, you'll be pleased to know ,there's a bit more to do in Mackenzie country than steal sheep.
