The Mission Houses Museum is a great place to understand how Hawaii moved toward what it is today.  This is where the written Hawaiian alphabet was developed, taught and printed.  It is the only place you can see early 19th century Honolulu history.  A person can also learn about the close friendship the early missionaries had with Queen Ka`ahumanu and other royal family members which made the mission successful...

Though you need to take a tour to see inside the historic houses (they have the oldest house in the state -1820),  The tour experience is very personable and interesting.

After your tour visit their new cafe. It has daily specials and is priced very reasonably, especially for Honolulu. Lunches are only between $5 and $7.

Visit their website at www.missionhouses.org to find out about tour times and current programs.
