The bay on the Gulf of Mexico where the city of Corpus Christi, Texas is now located was discovered by Spanish explorer, Alonzo Alvarez de Pineda in 1519.  Legend states that he discovered the area on the Roman Catholic feast day of Corpus Christi, thus giving the bay and the city that would later be built its name. 

Today Corpus Christi is the largest city on the Texas Gulf Coast.  It is a popular tourist destination with its white-sand beaches and many family-friendly attractions ranging from amusement parks to nature preserves.  The city is also well known as a significant sea port and for its role in the petroleum industry.
