Savannah Georgia is a family friendly city that will amuse all ages. The city is rich with history, educational programs, and activity centers. Before even considering activities however, don't forget that walking alone is a treasured pastime. All ages can enjoy the walking tours of the city and for the brave, ghostly tours are a must!
The Savannah History Museum is in the old railway station and has many interesting displays including a locomotive from America's past, relics from the Civil War, a cotton gin, and other Savannah artifacts that showcase the city's origins. A movie (admission fee is nominal) about the history of Savannah plays every 30 minutes and is a good orientation to the Savannah story. For those intrigued by Civil War history, a continuation should be extended to Fort Pulaski National Monument. About 1/2 hour from historic downtown, this very intact fort circa 1847 offers tours and educational programs, kids will love exploring a true fort. Adjacent the Savannah History Museum is the Roundhouse Railroad Museum, the former repair facility of the Central of Georgia Railway. You can tour through several buildings, the roundhouse and view the many rail cars and engines on site. There is also an informative video on the complex as well.
For those more into scientific discoveries, the Savannah Science Museum is full of exhibits and hands on activities geared for children and adults alike. Savannah wouldn't be complete without a maritime musuem. Ships of the Sea displays ship models such as steamships, nuclear-powered ships, and even some of Columbus' ships! as well as a collection of interesting marine artifacts. If you're planning to take a Trolley Tour, If you purchase you Trolley tour ticket at the Ships of the Sea Museum you will get free admission to the museum and free parking at the Museum as well. A Trolley alternative is to take a Hearse History Ride or Haunted Hearse RIde with Hearse Ghost Tours. Call them at 912-695-1578 for reservations. The Oatland Island Education Center is full of nature trails that families can enjoy. The preserve is home to many indigenous Georgian species. Scenic views of the marshes and observatories set the stage for a nature-inspired day-long getaway.
