The recommended mode of transportation for Koloa and the island of Kauai in general is rental car. The island is small and streets aren’t congested, so driving yourself is the easiest and most convenient way to reach all of your destinations. Most of the major commercial rental car agencies are stationed in the Lihue Airport, so you can either reserve online at your preferred company’s web site or use the booths directly across from the main terminal.
Once behind the wheel, getting places is fairly straightforward. It’s hard to get lost, as signs are clearly marked and locals are happy to give directions. Kauai County’s Vacation Information web page offers
to ten of Koloa and nearby Poipu’s most popular attractions. Click on the site you’re interested in and then on the button for “Driving Directions.”
If you won’t be renting a car, taxis are available at Lihue to take you to your hotel. Cabs usually line up on the street next to the baggage carousels, but there are also phone booths available to call one at off-peak hours. Fares can seem rather exorbitant, nearly $40 to take you from the airport to Koloa. A cheaper option is to try to take the
from Lihue. Service between the airport and Koloa is limited, but if you’re willing to wait, the ride will cost you under $2.
