Flying to Kauai or any of the other Hawaiian islands is a joy: where else can you be greeted with an “Aloha” and a gorgeous
? You don’t have to buy this service, of course, but after a tedious flight it will help lift your spirits and let you settle into a relaxed island vibe.
It depends on where you are coming from, but you will usually want to fly to the Lihue airport (LIH) on the island of Kauai, which is fairly close to Koloa. Several airlines, including United and Hawaiian, have regularly scheduled direct flights from California airports to Lihue. Since it’s possible to get to California from almost anywhere in the world, you won’t have to make more than the one connection there. Another option with only one connection is to fly to the airport in Honolulu (HNL), because many more U.S. and international cities offer flights to Hawaii’s capital. From Honolulu you can easily take a small inter-island plane to Kauai. Aloha Airlines and Hawaiian Airlines are the most reliable means of traveling inter-island, and even offer coupons that can make this alternative considerably cheaper.
It’s also possible to reach Koloa by cruise ship; however, you shouldn’t travel by cruise if visiting Koloa is your main objective, because it is usually only a brief stop out of many.
