Rental Car

Practically the only way to get around the Big Island is via car. Local services may be offered, but they are woefully inadequate and generally particular to that town or city, with infrequent scheduling. A four-wheel drive vehicle is the best way to explore the island, but a reminder that many rental car companies disable or disallow driving on unpaved roads (of which there are many, especially on Mauna Kea). Many companies disable the 4WD feature on their jeeps.

The majority of car rental companies are found at either Kona or Hilo International Airports.

As of this writing, Alamo did not disable the 4WD feature, but still officially disallows driving on unpaved roads. Harper Car and Truck Rental is the only car rental company on the island which allows its 4WD vehicles to traverse unpaved roads and especially Saddle Road (HI 20 -- the road to Mauna Kea) -- but you will pay extra for the privilege.
