Hells Canyon is the deepest river gorge in North America, deeper than the Grand Canyon. Hells Canyon is a roadless canyon. You can enter the Hells Canyon National Recreation Area at Hells Canyon Dam, 23 miles North of Oxbow, Oregon. Once you arrive at the dam the road ends and the fun begins. The only way you can see the deepest portions of the canyon is by boat, raft, or foot. There are a variety of things you can do in Hells Canyon.

10 things to do in Hells Canyon:

  1. Take a one day white water rafting trip with a jet boat return or a jet boat tour to Kirkwood Ranch.
  2. Fishing for sturgeon, steelhead, or catfish
  3. Hike from the dam down the Oregon side or hike from Granite Creek to Pittsburgh Landing and get picked up by a jet boat at the end of the hike.
  4. Picnic in the Spring and Fall, it is very hot in July and August
  5. Visit the Hells Canyon Creek Visitor Center, the ladies that work there are great!
  6. Look for wildlife, you might see bears walking along the river bank
  7. Pick fresh fruit along the road, later you can make incredible jam from the raspberries and apricots
  8. Watch the stars at night, you can always see the Milky Way and Big Diper
  9. Read a book while sitting next to the water listening to it roar down Hells Canyon
  10. Check out Kleinschmidt Grade, neat terrain, must have a four wheel drive vehicle
