Like most midwestern cities, you'll want to rent a car if you plan to travel around Columbus. Most Central Ohio attractions and shopping malls are closer to the suburbs. For Convention Visitors, there is plenty of eating and shopping near the Greater Columbus Convention Center, which is located adjacent to the Arena District and Short North Arts Districts.
Parking in the suburbs is free, of course, but when you're in downtown, expect the only options to be either garages or valet parking. Valet Service runs anywhere from $15 to $30 per diem with full in-and-out priviledges. For more information on individual hotel parking options, call the hotel directly or visit the hotel's website.
Valet Service is offered by most of the downtown Hotels and restaurants. You can expect to pay around $7.00 for event parking and $20 for overnight Valet Parking at a Hotel. No hotel accepts responsibility for lost, stolen, or damaged items (including cars), as most parking services are handled by separate private parking companies. Still, if your car is damaged, make sure to get as many names as possible, including the Hotel's GM, Manager-on-Duty, Valet Attendants involved, and a number for an insurance company handling the Parking Company's claims. This will be a long and drawn out process, but if you're persistent, and you have a good Insurance Agent of your own, this will help your claim.
Regardless, the hotel is responsible for the level of customer service, and you should not have to pay for your night's stay, plus any normal charges (taxi to and from that day's necessary events). You may initially have to pay for a tow truck and any incidentals, but keep good records, because your Insurance Agent will need this in event of repairations. Keep this documentation and if you have to speak with a Regional Manager to get your due, feel free to do so. These are unfortunate circumstances and it may take aggressive claims paid by the Valet Service.
Remember, in the mouseprint on all Parking Claim Checks are nasty reminders that nobody is responsibile for the car except you...and your Insurance Agent.
