Raleigh, which is the capital of North Carolina, is a city dedicated to promoting culture and the art. It is home to several cultural attractions and also many museums which have caused the city to be dubbed, the “ Smithsonian of the South.” Residents as well as visitors to Raleigh frequent the many cultural offerings in the city consistently throughout the year.

Some of the museums in Raleigh include the African American Cultural Complex, the Contemporary Art Museum, the Raleigh City Museum, and the North Carolina Museum of Art.

Raleigh is also home to an interactive global learning center called, “ Exploris.” This center, which opened in 2001, has a goal of teaching visitors about people of all cultures. This is accomplished through hands-on exhibits and other displays that encourage the center’s visitors to learn about life in other countries, as well as how international trade works. There is a children's museum is called the Marbles Kids Museum.

The performing arts complex in Raleigh is called the Progress Energy Center for the Performing Arts and it houses many theatres and halls. The North Carolina Symphony performs here, as well as the Carolina Ballet , National Opera Company and the A.J. Fletcher Opera Institute . The complex is also home to a plaza where festivals and concerts are held. This complex was opened in 2001.
