Chapel Hill spreads out from downtown Franklin Street. It's the hub of Tarheel activity --  UNC party central -- after hours due to its proximity and it's the place to  buy tarheel t-shirts & paraphernalia.

Neighborhoods include Glen Lennox (tree lined streets with brick apartments), Timberlyne (this covers most of north Chapel Hill and is home to both UNC and Duke professors), Meadowmont (with top notch UNC Wellness Center/Gym), and Southern Village on Route 15-501.  West of Chapel Hill is the town of Carrboro where you'll find attractive shops at Carr Mill Mall, coffee shops such as Yesteryear and The Open Eye, and more restaurants than you can shake a stick at (upscale Acme, and more casual Weaver Street Market).

Traveling west. via I-40, Chapel Hill is about 45 minutes from Raleigh, the state capital, and 15 minutes from Durham. The county seat, Hillsborough, is due north and a smaller, quieter place to visit.
