As on all vacations, you should take some time to review with your family or other people in your party some basic safety rules. Try to always be aware of your surroundings and whereabouts, set up meeting times if you split up, avoid walking or jogging alone late at night.
That said, one important thing you should know about as you're spending your vacation on the beach is
water safety. There is a beach flag system that is used on all Destin beach areas and it is as follows:
Green Flag = Low hazard; swimming is safe
Yellow Flag = Medium hazard
Red Flag = DANGER
Two Red Flags = Water is closed to public
Purple Flag = Marine pests are present
The flag system is in place to ensure that you'll have a safe vacation, but don't worry too much about it. Destin beaches are some of the safest in the country, not to mention some of the most beautiful.
