If you fly into Papeete, Tahiti’s capital city, you may be surprised at what a bustling and populated city it is. You may think to yourself, ‘This is Tahiti?? Not quite what I expected.” But fear not…if you are traveling on to Moorea – a mere 12 miles away -- a lush, green paradise awaits. Most travelers arrive in Moorea via ferry or plane; you can read more about Moorea transportation in the transportation section.

Calmer and more relaxed than Papeete, Moorea is also greener and more mountainous than its sister Bora Bora.  Although Bora Bora is the more famous island, Moorea is much larger and brings the best of both worlds to your Tahitian vacation. It offers both warm blue waters and gorgeous mountain vistas.  Unlike the other society islands, Moorea has both white and black sand beaches.

To get a feel for the island, take a 4x4 tour to see how pineapples grow and where the crew of the HMS Bounty mutinied.  Pass by simple villages and hillside waterfalls. Lastly, stop at one of the many black pearl jewelers to take home a souvenir that will always remind you of this wonderful place that smells like tiare flowers and tastes like vanilla.
