Generally you can enjoy two seasons in Puntarenas: the dry and the wet. The dry and the green. The dry and the “oh my gosh will it ever stop raining”? If you travel during the summer months, or even in the fall, you will visit Puntarenas during this latter season; pack the umbrella and galoshes.
Being that Costa Rica is only 8 to 11 degrees above the equator, it features a solid tropical climate. Depending on where certain cities are located, there are varying degrees of tropical in the weather at all times.
Puntarenas is on the Pacific Ocean side of Costa Rica, which means it’s a little less humid than the Costa Rica on the Caribbean, but degrees are a bit warmer.
The dry season here lasts from December to around April. Temperatures are roughly the same all year, however. So if you visit in December, you’ll enjoy a daily high average temperature of about 91, which is exactly the same as the average high in May. Nightly lows are in the low to mid 70s year round.
The crucial difference between visiting Puntarenas in December versus May is rainfall. December is historically dry – only about an inch of ran falls this month each year. However, visit in May and it’s a different story, as almost 7 ½ inches will fall, on average.
So when should you visit? It depends, really. Many cruise ships make Puntarenas a port stop, so if you want to avoid that, consider if there’s a “cruise season”. If you hate rain, and only want the sunshine and warmth, consider visiting January through March, when rainfall is at its lowest – each month only receives an average of about one-quarter inch of rain.
If you want to avoid crowds, visit midweek, since many native Costa Ricans head for Puntarenas on the weekends. Finally, if you want sunshine, remember that even during the rainiest months, Puntarenas can boast of at least 5 hours of sunshine daily. You’re sure to get your sunny fix no matter when you visit.
