Jaco is great located within 90 minutes drive from San Jose airport through the new toll highway well know as road 27, beware is better pay with local currency for the tolls due their bad exchange for USD... is easy to reach the town and beach but not many sights will be seeing, if renting a car get the GPS and for a private driver you can easily hire a great tico (local guy) to teach you about the country and also what to do in that specific area, many drivers come highly recommended with their great vehicles and value... also very popular are tours at the best price even fishing charters and national parks hike besides the adventure of zip line, river cruise, whitewater rafting, waterfalls, ATVs four wheelers, and horseback riding. Highly recommended the 80 minutes drive southeast to Manuel Antonio national park to spot lots of monkeys and enjoy one of the most beautiful beaches in Costa Rica, the drive is not as complicated and very scenic and enjoyable, a guide at the park will be a plus to see and learn more... Hire a guide at for kind of a walking encyclopedia if it comes to flora and fauna and history of the country. When it comes to volcanoes then have to get serious for day trip by driving since you will definitely get lost even with GPS to go to either Poas (closer to Jaco) or Arenal volcano (4 hours away), regardless it seems to be not as far at the map, which is truly not that far away, the driving time through those windy roads make trips last double time in comparisons to driving on a highway in USA.
Some police officers like to be kind of hide at the side of the highway near a students passing zone where you are supposed to reduce your speed to up to 18 miles per hour or 25 km per hour but signs are always missing and fines are pretty high in CR and they seemed to be interested in stopping tourists for a reason not $ure... Be aware!!! Better hire a driver previously arranged online to save some $$$ and troubles. Once in Jaco taxis are plentiful and affordable. The local buses are also inexpensive and easy to use.
You also will notice non red colored caps which are suposly licensed as well but normally their vehicles (yellow color normally) are in bad shape and driver can be rude and may be dangerous as well, for years they were known as pirates drivers till they got together and asked the gouverment to alow them to offer the service or increase the quantity of red cabs, nowadays the real result is missing but aparentely they are able to run a door to door service with a revious contract but at the practice they still park wherever and offer the taxi ride regarless the contract is done or not... Overall there are plenty of choices not only to move around but also to have a great stay and a vacation of alifetime, the town of Jaco feels a lot safer now, better ever!!...
