Essaouira's Gnawa Music Festival

Recently celebrating its 16th year and held in June (20-23 in 2013), Essaouira's Gnawa Music Festival is draws visitors to the seaside town from near and far. The festival still has the atmosphere of a local / Moroccan event --- for  local families  this is an opportunity to celebrate together -- adults and children.

The Gnawa music is a combination of traditional African rhythms and sounds--using drums, and other native instruments--and the Eastern-style music of Morocco.  This Festival showcases several Gnawa bands over a period of a few days.  It is a free event held in public parks and on stages set up in the streets.  You can sample traditional African and Moroccan foods, dance and have a good time.
