Tuaran (pronounced Twaran) town is the central town of the Tuaran District.  The district has population of around 30,000.

The town is around 30 km from Kota Kinabalu and 10 km from the Shangri-la Rasa Ria.

It is very much a local town and you won’t see many tourists.  However there is good shopping for all sorts of goods.  It is a good place to stock up on essential provisions including limited supplies of beer and spirits.

shoes, clothing, gifts and some souvenirs. There are some reasonable eating places. Tuaran is well-known for their Tuaran Mee (noodles). This is proudly advertised at coffeeshops & restaurants about town.

and a reasonable Sunday market for food, produce, local crafts, watches, clothing and many other items.

 

On the edge of the Main shopping area is a Chinese Pagoda.

Tuaran is the nearest town from Rasa Ria Resort, thus a good place to stock up on basics at local prices. Besides, Rasa Ria, there are several attractions, nearby. A crocodile farm, refreshing waterfalls, a large Bhuddist complex with a well-tended garden for meditative walks. A large tidal lake, Lake Sulaman, is just 10 minutes away from Tuaran, surrounded by Muslim fisher settlements & mangrove swamps. You may tour the lake by boat, managed by Chiswick Villa, a rental home, located on the lake front.Try your hand at fishing or simply laze on an isolated sandy beach that may only be reached by boat.
