Gulangyu Island, which covers 1.78 square kilometers, is 600 meters away from the city of Xiamen. The “Gulangyu” is Chinese Pinyin which means an island can produce voice. When the tides hit the rocks on the edge of the island, the rocks will sing, just like human beings.

The well-known attractions on and near the island are the statue of Zheng Chenggong and the cruise from Xiamen to Gulangyu Island.

The statue of Zheng Chenggong was built in 1985 in memory of the Ancient hero who defeated Dutch invaders and reoccupied Taiwan Island from them. The statue is 15.7 meters high and the rock on which it is located is 24 meters high. It is a very good attraction for the travelers who want to know more about the history of China.

The cruise from Xiamen to Gulangyu Island usually takes 40 minutes. The ship will cruise around the island and travelers on board can see the main attractions on the island. If the weather is good enough, travelers can even see the Jinmen Island, which is currently administrated by the government of Taiwan.
