The great thing about vacationing in Split is that it is the center of Dalmatia--so after enjoying Diocletian's Palace, swimming at Bene or Bacvice, great museums and wonderful shopping, within an hour or two you can enjoy world-class sightseeing.
Highlights include no less than THREE different UNESCO sites in addition to Diocletian's Palace! (vinyeards and olive orchards continuously cultivated for more than 2,000 years on Hvar; Trogir's walled old town and Sibenik's Cathedral); sun-kissed offshore islands of Solta, Brac, Hvar and Vis; stunning Krka National Park, adventursome Omis, ancient Salona and more!
Here's just a primer of some of what is in store:
Split Walking Tours
The crown jewel of Split is of course Diocletian's Palace, the retirement "home" of the Emperor Diocletian. For more than 1700 years it has been home to everyone from Emperors to refugees. And today some 3000 people still live within its walls. Although you can meander through the streets and alleys by yourself, a guided tour will help you understand just how the different centuries affected the Palace and and have made it the "living monument" that it is today, compard to Dubrovnik's walled Old Town which is much more of museum piece. Whether you want to take a walking tour of the Palace or an extended walking tour, almost every agency offers them for as little as 80kn per person ($15). Several agencies set up shop outdoors in the Peristyl and offer tours every day at: 10.00, 11,45 and 19.00--but you can also ask for a custom tour. Registered guides all have photo ID's and the going rate for a private tour is around $50. Segway, the wonderful motorized two wheeled personal "transporter" is also here. They offer guided tours as well and you can cover a lot of ground rolling along. The cell number is 091-333-1451, and information is available at the Tourist Office on the Riva as well as in the Peristil. Explore Split City with an entertaining audio guide, photos and city map included for iphone or android for only $3.99 www.mobitrips.com

To the islands. The Jadrolinija ferry terminal is here, just a 10 minute walk from the Riva, so you can hop on a ferry and get to Brac, Hvar, Solta or Vis any day and the service is frequent. Solta is the closest island, about an hour. Hvar and Brac take less than 2 hours and Vis, the furthest out takes a bit longer. Find out more about each island, since each is quite different by contacting the tourist boards on the island or www.sightseeingcroatia.com . You can take either a catamaran (faster) or a ferry to the islands. Only the ferries take cars. www.jadrolinija.hr, which has an English "button" so you can read the information, is the state run ferry service. So check this site for timetables. You can even go all the way down to Dubrovnik and back for the day, but the trip is a good 12 hours since the bus ride there and back is 8 hours. Other companies like Snav and Blue Line run ferries all the way to Italy and also offer daily service.
Split now joins Omis and Trogir offering daily cruises right from the waterfront. The M.V. Nera, a restored wooden English-design tender, takes you to Trogir first, with a professionally guided tour; then to its own private preserve on the island of Drvenik Veli on the "Blue Lagoon" an amazingly clear and multi-hued blue lagoon that's a magnet for swimmers. This program includes a real cooked over wood fish or chicekn lunch with wine from Vis served in a private, shaded area next to the beach. A second boat, the Antenal, does the traditional two-island cruise--to Solta and Brac, and fries its fish on the boat and serves it there as well. The price for these trips is 265-285kn.
National Parks. Like the Split Walking Tour, all agencies offer day trips to the national park in Krka, a wonderful preserve with cool river filled pools where you can swim, easy hiking and unique flora and fauna. A launch from the picture-book village of Skradin takes you up river to the park, a lovely 20 minute trip into nature--and the admission to the park includes RT on the launch..
Omis, about 40 minutes south of Split (#60 bus from the Green Market twice an hour) is the place to go for adventure tourism. The high bluffs looming over the town are great for hiking. There's also white water rafting, canyoning, rock climbing and other action activity. One of the agencies that specializes in this kind of touring is www.lifejacketadventures.com and www.avantura.biz so check them out as well as the Omis Tourist Board website.
Sibenik is less than two hours by bus--the terminal is oppostie the ferry terminal--and it too is a UNESCO site, famed for its fascinating Cathedral. The historic core is a wonderful walk, almost like being in an Italian village, with its many squares and meandering streets. Sibenik also has an attractive waterfront and some very good restaurants.
The ancient Roman capital of Dalmatia, Salona is only 30 minutes away and sadly, not very visited. Although partially restored, this once glorious capital that was home to Diocletian and almost 60,000 people was so badly devastated by the invading Avars in the 5thC and later pillaged by the Venetians who carted off entire buildings to re-build new palaces, that most of the vast area is fields and bits and pieces of ancient edifices. Nontheless, the sheer scope and drama is well worth a visit. The sarcophogi are particularly fascinating and remnants of the amphitheatre and other buildings, later medeival structures, a small museum and just being able to walk through such a vast area without the crowds makes Salona a memorable experience.
