Travel with very young children can be difficult on Lamu as there is no transport other than boat or donkey. Also there are no special facilities for children. The architecture is such that open staircases and dangerous drops are common place. A very real problem will be mosquitoes and malaria. If you are travelling with young children I would recommend you stay in Shela as it is cleaner than the town and right on the beach, altho' the hotels are much more expensive. Bottled water is readily available. Be suspicious of restaurent food and try to stay where there is staff to cook fresh market produce for you.
