Devastated by earthquake and fire in 1931, Napier was rebuilt in only 2 years in the Art Deco Style of the 30's and today retains many of those building, lovingly restored. The Art Deco Trust's volunteers lead Art Deco Walks 2-3 times a day, every day and they are well worth the few dollars charge. Napier is situated in the lovely Hawkes Bay, often described as 'The Fruit Bowl of New Zealand' due to it's profusion of orchards, vineyards and latterly Olive groves. Napier has many good cafes and restaurants, and within half an hour's drive are more than 60 vineyards, many of which have restaurants too.
