Drive the Great Ocean Road from Melbourne to to Port Fairy

The GOR is an easy coastal drive with plenty to see and do for the entire family. Allow three or four days to take in all the sights. Affordable accommodations pepper the coast; booking in advance is recommended.

  • On the way out of Melbourne, stop at Serendip Sanctuary in Lara to see the emus and kangaroos.
  • While driving through the coastal villages, look for pink parrots (Gallah) along the way.
  • Stop at Apollo Bay for provisions and overnight.
  • Drive to the Otway Lightstation - look for koalas resting in the Eucalyptus trees enroute.
  • Take the treetop walk in the Ottway rainforest.
  • Hike up to Triple Falls.
  • Ride the helicopter over 12 Apostles.
  • Spend the night in Port Campbell.
  • Watch the sunset over the Bay of Martyrs / Bay of Islands.
  • Hike the trails at Gibson Bay, Port Fairy. Look for wallabys and kookaburas.
  • Visit Tower Reserve; look for emus and kangaroos.
  • Back in Melbourne, check into your hotel.
  • At sunset, drive to St Kilda's Pier to see the Little Penguins. Don't take their picture as it hurts their eyes. Do carry a flashlight with red cellophane tape over it.
