Whilst you’re not actually permitted to stay in the lighthouses themselves, the original keeper’s cottages are often available for holiday rental. There are actually plenty of locations around the country where this is possible.
1. Cape Don Experience – Cobourg Peninsula, NT
Located on the northernmost point of the Cobourg Peninsula, this site offers only 1 accommodation option – the Headkeeper’s Cottage – but it does sleep 12. Whilst there are 2 other cottages on the property, they’re currently being used as wilderness lodges. The area is famous for fishing and there are actually charters available, but many people love the location for its beautiful wrap around porch.
2. Cape Schanck Lighthouse – Cape Schanck, VIC
Located on the southernmost point of the Mornington Peninsula, this lighthouse accommodation in Australia offers 4 options – two 3 bedroom self contained cottages, one 1 bedroom self contained cottage, and a motel style room sleeping two. Each of the cottages was once the residence of a keeper and their family, whilst the motel room was where the inspector stayed when he decided to pay a visit.
3. Sugarloaf Point Lighthouse – Seal Rocks, NSW
Located in the northern corner of the Myall Lakes National Park, this site offers 3 accommodation options – the Headkeeper’s Cottage or one of 2 Assistant Keeper’s Cottages. Each of the cottages offers stunning ocean views and can accommodate a maximum of 6 guests, so is the perfect option for families or friends. On the nearby beach, guests can enjoy the rockpools or even take a stroll.
4. Swan Island Lighthouse – Swan Island, TAS
Located off Cape Portland in the state’s north-east, this site offers 2 accommodation options – Eliza’s Cottage (which was once the residence of the head keeper) can sleep a total of 4 people but can also be split into private units sleeping 2 people each. The cottage’s namesake, Eliza, is buried in a marked grave on the island, giving way to rumours that her ghost haunts the premises – spooky!
5. Troubridge Island Lighthouse – Troubridge Island, SA
Located on a tiny island in the Gulf of St Vincent, this site is accessible via the town of Edithburgh. There is only one accommodation option on offer and you have to get special permission to stay there from either the Innes National Park Office or the Troubridge Island Hideaway and Charter. You must also bring your own food, drinks and linen. The island offers plenty of natural attractions, from birdwatching to fishing.
6. Cape Byron Lighthouse - Byron Bay, NSW
