Exploring the South Coast of Norway is best done with your own
car, though there is limited
bus service available between Oslo and some of the larger cities along the southern coast. However, if you really want to see the countryside, and not have to worry about sticking to a certain schedule, you will definitely want to have access to your own vehicle.
Rental cars are readily available from the airport in Oslo and most other major cities have rental car outlets as well.
During the winter time, you will want to bring a pair of
cross-country skis, as these will provide you with the best mode of transportation to explore the terrain. Norway is renowned for its cross-country trails, and as birthplace of skiing, it has every right to be. The skiing lasts November through Easter in the country, with summer skiing available on some of the country's glaciers.
