Pre-teens will likely find the area of Kitzbühel to be a true winter wonderland, no matter what time of the year they get to visit. There are travel packages available through the official Kitzbühel Tourism Web site, and with activities for the whole family there is always plenty to do.

In winter the area will practically seem straight out of a storybook, and from early December the city is decked out for Christmas with special marketplaces of crafts and gifts, a petting zoo, pony rides and plenty of other activities to get you in the holiday mood. Likewise, throughout the winter there are plenty of opportunities to take a winter sleigh ride that will have you and the whole family dashing through the woods on a one-horse open sleigh.

More of the area’s wildlife can be visited up close at the Wildlife Park in nearby Aurach. Home to a few hundred animals, including deer, lynx, boar and peacocks and yaks this is the largest open-air park of its kind in the Tyrol. Daily feeding is at 2:30pm throughout most of the year.

And while the Tyrol might not seem ideal for water sport, the region is home to several lakes and by mid-summer warm up nicely under the Alpine sun. After a day of nature hikes or taking in the sites you can cool off in one of several nearby lakes.
