The is a beautiful lake area surrounded by high mountains. Soaking in the wonderful views takes from one-half to an entire day. Simply take Bus 150 from the mirabellplatz to Strobl. From there you can take a public ferry to St. Gilgen where you can take Bus 150 back into Salzburg. Both the bus ride and the ferry are very reasonable. A stop on the ferry in St. Wlfgange allows you to tour the town and church there. Once in St. Gilgen there is a cable car you can take to the top of the mountain. It is important to check the timetable for returning in Salzburg to avoid spending the night.
If you don't have a lot of time but you want to get to the mountains, you can take the number 25 bus to Untersberg mountain. The bus journey lasts only 35 minutes and the bus terminates at the cable car station at the foot of the mountain.
It costs 18 euros for a return trip in the cable car, which takes another 15 or 20 minutes each way. It is the highest mountain in the area and the views are magnificent. You can go for a walk, ski, or just go to the quaint Alpine lodge, which is just outside the cable car terminus at the top of the mountain, for some "gluhwein", sausage or beer. This daytrip could be the highlight of your trip - it is beautiful!
A cheaper way to see this mountain would be to buy the Salzburg City Card which includes unlimited bus trips (including this one from Salzburg to the cable car) and one cable car ride to the top and back. You can also see the other attractions of Salzburg with this card and hence purchasing it be more economical in the long run.
