This is the major neoclassical building out of the UK.  It was built between 1770 and 1824 after a project by the british architect John Carr. It arose some criticisms saying it appeared more like a palace than a hospital. It is an important architectonic milestone in Oporto, as its neopalladian style – similar to buildings like Bolsa Palace or Ordem de São Francisco - opposes to the barroque of Nazoni.
