The Azores is a chain of islands located 1300 km (800 miles) off the western coast of Portugal. The nine islands of the Azores are themselves spread over 650 km (400 miles). However, getting to and from the various islands that make up the chain is actually not that difficult. International airports, which provide service from continental Europe, the United States, and Canada, are located on the islands of Sao Miguel, Faial, and Terceira. In addition, a local airline, SATA, provides service between islands. Another option to travel between islands is to take one of the ferries. Weekly ferry service is provided between the central islands of Faial, Pico, Sao Jorge, Terceira, and Graciosa. During the summertime there is daily ferry service between the islands of Corvo and Flores.
Because bus service is not really meant for tourists, other than relying on your own two feet, another option to explore each island would be to rent a car. Rental cars are available on most islands.Azores Express, a member of the SATA Group, offers daily service from Boston Logan Airport and Oakland to the Azores and Lisbon from June to September. Azores Express also offers two, four-hour flights every week to the Azores in the winter and spring (with connecting service to Lisbon and Madeira). The airline offers direct flights on wide-body aircraft to São Miguel, the main island in the Azores archipelago, and to the historic island of Terceira in the summer. Direct flights to Portugal’s capital of Lisbon are offered in the summer, with one-stop connecting service offered the rest of the year. SATA offers connecting flight to all of the islands. SATA Express has regular flights from Toronto, and summer service from Montreal. Azores Express has connected New England with the Azores and mainland Portugal for 20 years. The carrier is part of the SATA Group, which connects the Azores, an autonomous region of Portugal, with the world. SATA, founded in 1946, offers connecting service to all nine islands in the Azores. The airline operates a fleet of new Airbus A310s on Trans-Atlantic routes.
