Rotterdam makes a perfect combination with other interesting places in Holland. It is an ideal home base for further trips in the Netherlands due to its very central location and ideal train connections with other cities.

Historic Delft is only 15 minutes by car or 10 minutes by train and from April - September there are 3-hour excursions by boat from Rotterdam to the 19 windmills at Kinderdijk. This unique site is UNESCO world heritage.

Schiedam is only 5 minutes by train and is home to 5 of the tallest historic wind mills in the world right in the city center.

The Maeslantkering, part of the Delta Works, is also close to Rotterdam.

On hot summer days the beach of Hoek van Holland is a nice place to go. It is easily reachable by train.

The Hague is easily reachable by train and car and the trip takes only 15-20 minutes by train. Leiden takes about 30 minutes and Utrecht 40 minutes and Amsterdam 40 minutes when you take the fast train (Intercity Direct, or a bit more than 1 hour when you take the normal intercity trains).

Rotterdam is an ideal location to stay when you plan to visit both the Netherlands as well as some cities in Belgium. Train connections to the other major Dutch cities are perfect and trains run directly from Rotterdam to Belgium.
