Lugano is considered a safe city to visit, as safe as the whole of Switzerland. But like many parts of Europe, you must be aware of pickpockets and conceal your valuables accordingly. If you are carrying an expensive bag or wearing expensive sunglasses, some say you might be the target of a well-placed pickpocket.
As with all travel destinations, if you’re traveling to Lugano, be aware of your surroundings and take care with all your belongings. Most areas of Lugano are safe, but some areas might turn a little less safe at night for tourists. It’s still nothing like crime Americans might be cautious of, but enough to keep you on your toes.
You’ll find in your other readings about Lugano there will be many mentions of the extremely low crime rate in the lakeside Swiss city. Compared to other possible travel destinations, that is likely true, but locals and residents argue there has been an increase in the crime rate in recent years, including the aforementioned pickpockets and in robberies on overnight trains coming in to or out of the city.
