The Lake Maggiore area has cold winters and cool summers.  It's cold winters, combined with its large mountains and snow, make for ideal skiing conditions.  The average low temperature in the region in January is in the 20's, but it has been known to rise as high as the low 40's during the day, the daytime hours typically receiving a lot of sunshine.
