This small church is not well known by tourists, but is of great interest to those who enjoy art because the church has its ceiling frescoes done by Goya. There is also a cupola at the ceiling, also with frescoes by Goya. The paintings show the miracle done by Saint Antonio de Padua. Saint Antonio’s father was accused of killing a man and the saint tried to convince the judges that his father was innocent but they did not believe him. So Saint Antonio asked to have the corpse exhumed to interrogate him, and the saint revived the dead man. Of course the saint’s father was declared innocent. The paintings show the people of Madrid looking on. This is Goya’s Sistine Chapel, in a small scale, but the paintings are beautiful.
