The Museum of
Modern Art was started in 1976 by the Provincial Council of Tarragona. The site
consists of three 18th century houses grouped together and restored.
The permanent collection has the Tapestry of Tarragona that Joan Miro designed
and was commissioned to the artist Josep Royo, who made the tapestry. He was
connected to the Catalan Tapestry School. The 20th-century paintings and
sculptures feature the artists Julio Antonio, Salvador Martorell, Santiago
Costa, Josep Sancho, José Nogué, Ramon Carreté, and Lluís Saumells. There is
also a documentary section, a photography section, a library and temporary exhibits.
