Beyond the town of Burgos there is much to do and see in the surrounding region. The Castile-Leon province to home to several fascinating villages and many of these are a short drive from Burgos.

The town of Belorado is another medieval town that offers plenty of old world charm, and as with Burgos it was an important center during the Middle Ages, and has several unique Baroque architecture and the ruins of the once mighty defensive walls.

The nearby town of Olmillos is home to a massive 16th century castle, which was one of the deceive strongholds in this region of Spain. Built using the later Romanesque style architecture the castle is as a classic example of a what castles are typically thought to be. While today in ruins the medieval fortress in the town of Castrojeriz is also impressive, and seeing the remains of such a powerful fortification is a reminder of the regions turbulent past.

To the north of Burgos is the town of Puentearenas, which is home to several impressive buildings including the 11 th century Romansque abbey as well as the Palace of Espinosa de los Monteros and the Palace of Sedano, and the 11 th century temple of Rebolledo de la Torre. These are all classic examples of the late gothic and early Romanesque architecture in the region.
