Tenerife North Airport (TFN) is used only for domestic services (to Spain or other Canary Islands) and to Germany. Ryanair started flights from Dublin but these have ceased. Most tourists are heading for the south of the island, and charter and international airlines use Tenerife South Airport (TFS). Other than car hire, alternative transport between the two airports is either a taxi which will cost a minimum of €120 each way, or the public bus.
Tenerife buses (called guaguas and pronounced 'wah wahs') are clean, cheap and comfortable; they are run by TITSA. You can download a bus route map and timetable from www.titsa.com (the site is in English). Times below are from the June 2010 timetable. [343 amended for 2014.]
The Bonovia (or Bono) discount ticket (€15 or €25) allows heavily discounted fares. Purchase from bus stations (either value) or from bookshops or other outlets carrying the green circle logo - they only sell the €15 Bono. Simply tell the driver the destination and put the ticket in a machine which deducts the fare from the initial payment; put it in the machine twice for two people etc; when it runs out, pay the difference in cash to the driver; the Bono also allows free or very cheap connections if you use another bus within two hours of the first, and also gives discounts at some museums. After a bus trip using a Bonovia, the Tranvia (tram) ride between Santa Cruz and La Laguna is free.
You can buy a €15 Bonovia ticket at the South (TFS) airport at a small shop "La Alpizpa", the last shop on the right at the Departures end, beyond Burger King, opposite check-in gate 47 and the Information Desk. Turn left when leaving Arrivals - it's a good 2 minutes walk from arrivals to the shop and the same back again to the bus stops outside Arrivals The shop is open 1000-1800 - but not on public holidays.
Buses run regularly from the southern resorts (Los Cristianos/Las Americas) to Santa Cruz via TFS, and between northern towns (including Puerto de la Cruz) and Santa Cruz via TFN. At some times changing at Santa Cruz may be quickest for journeys between the north and south (see services 111 and then 102 below). However, the direct service 343 now (2014) has an increased frequency.
Route 343 offers direct connection between Los Cristianos, TFS, TFN and Puerto de la Cruz (PdlC). Some buses go beyond Los Cristianos to/from Las Americas and Costa Adeje.
[Note that there may also be direct services between PdlC in the northwest and Los Cristianos & Costa Adeje in the south which do not call at the airports.]
