Each summer, up to 200,000 people flock here for the famous Festival d’Avignon . Started in 1947, the international event is held during the last three weeks of July and the first week of August. Spectators can expect to see avant-garde theatre, dance, music and cinema, with events throughout the town, including in the streets and historical monuments. And the fun typically lasts well into the night. Accommodations are incredibly tough to come by during this festival, so make your plans well in advance.
And every June the more modest, yet still impressive, Avignon Film Festival comes to town. The thought-provoking event celebrates French, European and American independent film. Guests will be treated to premieres, retrospectives, and discussions with industry experts.
