Antiques (and their replicas sold as souvenirs), books and wine are the most popular items among travelers.
Browse the book stores in the Bastide Saint Louis. There are plenty of stores (and some scarce bookshops) along George Clemenceau street. There, you will find rare or sold out editions mainly in French, but isn’t it a treasure to find an old edition of Madame Bovary or other French classic novel? Or a beautifully handcrafted notebook? And it is no wonder you’ll find these gems as the region boasts a long tradition of book binding shops! Montolieu, also called “the city of books”, is only 8 miles from Carcassonne.
Antiques? You’ll find the items that were used in different moments of the history of France from old maps to weapons and clothing in the antique shops in La Cite. These stores are like museums where you can feel that you are back in history. Try Antiquites, one of the oldest stores on Porte c’Aude street. Many stores sell replicas of these objects (swords, shields, armors) that make excellent souvenirs or great amusement toys for the kids.
You can buy wine from neighboring wineries, at local stores or at the market that every Saturday opens at Place Carnot in La Bastide. The region’s specialty is rose wine, being the Chateau Villerambert-Moureau one of the best regional producers (the Minervois is their most popular kind).
