Cafe (plenty of seating) serving lovely, fresh, often organic food at very reasonable prices.  Dishes like lamb tangine, loads of wraps and organic milkshakes.  Wide selection of veggie food as well.  Worth making the effort to find. Highly recommended.

Cafe in the Crypt - (Charing Cross tube)
Directions: St. Martin in the Fields, Trafalgar Square. Near Trafalgar Square (National Gallery, National Portrait Gallery).
Description: Tasty hearty hot food and salads in a non-creepy crypt. Nice atmosphere, and good prices.

Very popular British 'canteen' fare.

Jewish / Mediterreanean cafe that does good falafel and massive salt beef sandwiches.

Il Panino - (Piccadilly Circus tube) 3 Winnett Street W1D 6JY 
A lovely Italian joint that does cheap (for Central London prices) coffees, teas and sandwiches with a place to sit down and relax.

Wong Kei - (Leicester Square tube) Wardour Street, Chinatown
Chinese. Infamous for its waiting staff who throw plates of food at you.  Who can complain at such dirt cheap prices?

Hing Loon - (Leicester Square tube) Lisle Street, Chinatown
Traditional Chinese food; plain simple and filling; good noodle dishes at good prices.

Crispy Duck - (Leicester Square tube) Wardour Street, Chinatown
Chinese.  Good value-for-money plates of noodles and meat and rice dishes.

1997 - (Leicester Square tube) Wardour Street, Chinatown
24-hour eatery.  Popular with clubbers post night-out.  Roast meats hanging in the window like in all authentic Chinese cafes.

Misato - (Leicester Square tube) Wardour Street, Chinatown
Japanese rice and noodles dishes. Beware the long queues.

TAI - Greek Street, Soho (several other locations too)

Great Thai Buffet for only £6 as much as you can eat or £3 for a takeaway box. Amazing range of tasty oriental dishes and completely vegan. Some 'meat type' dishes using soya. WARNING: this place was recently featured in a BBC documentary for very poor food hygiene and the employing illegal immigrants.

VIET - 34 Greek Street, nr jct Shaftesbury Avenue

Good and authentic Vietnamese street food such as Beef Pho noodles, spring and summer rolls at budget prices.

Fernandez & Wells - 43 Lexington Street, Soho, London, W1F 9AL
Part sandwich shop, part wine bar. Picture lots of chorizo and manchego and a nice and compact wine list, where the staff can tell you their favorites. (There are always two whites and two reds up on the main chalkboard as their selections, but then there are more choices on the back board.) Very small. Maybe eight stools? Get a selection of Spanish and Italian cheeses and meats and a glass of wine and enjoy.


Bodeans - (Oxford Circus tube) 10 Poland Street, London W1F 8PZ
American ribs restaurant.  Many special deals like kids eating free.

Mildreds - (Oxford Circ, Pic Circ, TCR tubes) Lexington St in Soho
Vegetarian restaurant. Bit canteen like, tables crammed together so décor not as good as Eat & 2 Veg, but the food is amazing! Really great veggie food, organic wines, smoothies etc.  Don't take table reservations so be prepared to queue during peak times.

Busaba Eathai - 106-110 Wardour Street, Soho, London W1F 0TR
Sister chain to the Wagamamas brigade, Thai food. Here, rather than canteen style benches you get square communal tables. Long queues outside at popular times. Nice food.


Browns - St. Martins Lane
Brasserie style food in informal but lively surroundings. Friendly and fast moving staff, an excellent wine list and a bar area to wait or just enjoy a cocktail. Moderate with a some pre-theatre budget deals.

Randall and Aubin - (Piccadilly Circus tube) 16 Brewer Street, Soho, London W1F 0SQ
Especialised in seafood but offers something for everyone - steak, salads, rotisserie chicken, pork belly and lamb. Located  in an old converted grocers/butchers, it offers a chilled atmosphere at lunchtime but very lively in the evening with fairly loud but great music and very friendly service. Take-away and delivery also available.

Randall & Aubin Restaurant

Chowki (Piccadilly Circus tube) - 2-3 Denman Street. 

Indian regional cuisine. Each month, the food from three regions in India are featured.  The food and cooking is excellent and authentic.

St Moritz - 161 Wardour Street, Soho, London W1V 3TA
Swiss fondue heaven! Décor on the tacky side but great fun and lovely cheese or choc fondues.

Andrew Edmunds -  Lexington Street
Atmospheric room, great value food.  Tables too close together but that's part of the charm


Simurgh - (Leicester Square and Covent Garden tubes)
Good fun and good food Persian restaurant. They have a belly dancer most Fridays and Saturdays (just before 10pm). Delicious flavoured rice accompanies the dishes.

Vasco & Piero's Pavilion - (Oxford Circus tube) 15 Poland Street, London, W1F 8PZ
In Soho, south of Oxford Street & east of Regent Street. Between Oxford Street and Broadwick Street.
Traditional, home-style Italian cooking in a warm atmosphere. 


W’Sens - (Piccadilly Circus tube) 12 Waterloo Place, south of Piccadilly Circus

Gaucho Grill - (Piccadilly Circus tube)
Chain of Argentinian steak restaurants.  Very good steak.  Excellent wine list.

Also try Docklands Branch (Canary Wharf/Westferry Tube/DLR) for nice outside seating and river views. 

Yauatcha - (Oxford Circus tube) Berwick Street.
Posh dim sum. Alan Yau's chain. Lovely ambiance, also serves tea and cakes (not the Western sort) in the teahouse section.

Lindsay House  - (Romilly St - Leicester Sq Tube) - Super British/Irish menu. Tasting Menus. Good Wines. Super service.  Private rooms for parties up to 10 or so make for very intimate quality dining

Boisdale restaurant in Victoria, for a very Scottish dining experience.  The owner, Ranald, is very accommodating.
