Though the beaches here are gorgeous, rough currents and steep drop-offs make swimming dangerous along Playa Hotelera, where most of the hotels are located. Safer swimming can be found at Pueblo la Playa about 2 miles east of town; Medano Beach in Cabo San Lucas; and Playa Palmilla, which has beautiful rock formations. There is also a great swimming area in and around Puerto Los Cabos.
You can also enjoy the water via fishing, snorkeling, SCUBA diving, surfing, sea kayaking, or whale watching. Most of the area hotels can arrange fishing trips, and the least expensive option is to pair up with other anglers and charter a panga, a 22-foot skiff. For diving, Cabo Plumo has seven sites geared for divers of all levels, and the possibility of snorkeling with sea lions. Gordo Banks is an advanced dive site where divers can see whale sharks and hammerhead sharks. For surfing, Playa Costa Azul is the hotspot, but you can find good surfing all along the beaches west of Cabo, and along the Corridor at Acapulquito, El Tule, and La Bocana. Sea kayaking is also popular, and rentals and tours are available at several companies in Cabo San Lucas and along the Corridor.
The best whale watching excursion is a trip to Magdalena Bay. Tours from San Jose Del Cabo take guests by plane for a 75-minute flight, where they board a panga and spend three hours watching gray whales and humpbacks relax among the coastal lagoons. Tours can be arranged through Xplora Adventours . Of course you can also spot the whales from shore, mostly from the beaches and cliffs along the Corridor.
One of the main reasons people come to Cabo is to fish. Fishing out of San jose del cabo is a quick boat ride to the world famous gordo banks. Pueblo La Playa (or la playita) at the Puerto los Cabos marina in San Jose is a unique small fishing village experience where they recently opened the second hotel (el ganzo). This fishing village is not the big Cabo San LUCAS being pushed to buy something experience. This is relaxed Mexico. The fishing facilities in La Playa are some of the best in the world. The palapa for the fish cleaning stations at first appears to be a nice open bar on the beach. The marble counter tops juxtposed the relaxed atmosphere with the locals and the fisherman all hanging out cleaning the catch is the type of experience that fisherman strive to have after a great day on the water. There are plenty of great fishing companies running charters from Puertos Los Cabos, Gordo Banks Pangas (Gordobanks.com), Wahoo Loco Sportsfishing (wahooloco.com), Fati Sportsfishing (Caboadventuresportfishing.com) can all assist with a top notch fishing experience.
