From Cancun airport to Gran Puerto Ferry terminal in Puerto Juarez
The Ultramar ferry is 146 pesos per person round trip, and takes approximately 20 minutes. Children's fare is really for very small children as it's based on height. The Gran Puerto Ferry schedule is every half hour between 5:00 a.m. and 8:30 p.m., then every hour until 11:30.
From Hotel Zone
There are three Ultramar docks in the hotel zone: Playa Caracol, El Embarcadero (Playa Linda) and Playa Tortuga. The fare is $19 plus $3 ferry fees (basically chairs for you to wait). Ferry schedule is a little more limited than to Gran Puerto, with the last ferry back from Isla Mujeres to Playa Linda and Playa Tortuga at 9:15. To Playa Caracol the last ferry back is at 5:15.
By taxi: Official rate is 74 dollars one-way from the arrival exit at the terminal. The drive is roughly 30 - 40 minutes depending on traffic.
Private transfers: There are many transportation companies offering private transfers in which the vehicle booked is just for you and your party
Shared Service: Best Day Offers shared transfer paying as little as $29 per person roundtrip. Many other companies can be found and booked directly at Airport for shared shuttle, it costs around $20 per person roundtrip and could take over an hour if dropping lots of people off in Hotel Zone. You may be lucky and travel alone or with just another couple, it all depends on luck. Also consider that shared transfers have a limited itinerary, about 9:00 AM to 8:00 PM, so if your flight arrives or leaves too early in the morning or later in the night, it may not be an option for you. Buy your ticket inside the airport, then hand it to shuttle driver. If you miss the airport counter, you can also purchase the shuttle outside in the parking lot from a 'representative', there are many there promoting their brand.
Bus: ADO buses cost around $5 per person. It departs the airport and drop you off in the Cancun bus station. From there a cheap cab drive for about another $5 can leave you at the ferry dock. About same as the shuttle time wise.Visit theirwebsite for more info on scheduled departures.
A pictorial guide to navigating the airport and getting to the ADO bus station in Cancun. Though the website primarily deals with how to get to Playa del Carmen and Cozumel, it provides excellent, step-by-step info, complete with pictures. that would benefit travelers to Isla as well. Information on arrivals at various terminals, on how to get from one terminal to another, and how and where to catch ADO bus to downtown Cancun. Even if you are not planning on taking bus th website is well worth checking out just so you can orient yourself upon arrival.
Once you arrive on Isla Mujeres: You have several options for reaching your lodings, they are - walking, bicycle cab, cab, or loding shuttle. Walking is fine with minimum luggage to a nearby place; bicycle cab is recommended if you are nearby but have more luggage than you can comfortably manage by yourself (they bike your luggage, you walk along, and they do this for tips, no set cost), of course, cabs are always another alternative. If you're staying outside of the Centro area then a cab is necessary. Cab fare is around $5 USD from the ferry dock to hotels in Centro, and around $9 to Sac Bajo, and that is for the full cab, not per person. Always ask before you get in the cab for the fare, some drivers will tack another dollar on and you can haggle it down. Not all lodging locations have a shuttle, contact your lodging prior to your trip to find out if they provide this service.
Returning to Cancun from Isla Mujeres
The Gran Puerto Ferry schedule is every half hour between 5:30 a.m. and 9:00 p.m., then every hour until Midnight. Ultramar to El Embarcadero (Playa Linda) and Playa Tortugas at the hotel zone has added later ferries, with ones leaving Isla Mujeres at 6:45, 8:00, and 9:15 p.m.
Taxi or Bus from Puerto Juarez to Cancun
The Ultramar ferry dock is significantly farther from downtown Cancun. The public transportation from that area are mostly vans, you can catch one to Cancun directly outside Puerto Juarez dock/terminal and costs a few pesos per person. After 10:30 pm the taxi drivers ask for about $50 per taxi to drive to Cancun from Puerto Juarez. After 10:00 pm there is limited ground transportation from Puerto Juarez to Cancun- plan this part before going to Isla Mujeres.
