It’s Japan’s oldest castle! Matsumoto Castle is one of the five castles designated as National Treasures of Japan. It’s over 400 years old, making it the oldest castle donjon remaining in the country. Unlike many palaces in Japan, the original structure was, fortunately, not bombed during WWII, keeping most of its original wooden donjons and walls. It is said that Hokusai is the most famous Japanese person in the world. He was active as an Ukiyoe artist during the Edo Period. In Ganshoin that is located on Ofuse, Nagano prefecture, there is a ceiling painting that Hokusai painted when he was in eighties. ※Ukiyoe is a color print of everyday life in the Edo period.
