Bosnia and Herzegovina Tourism: Best of Bosnia and Herzegovina

With a landscape that’s more vertical than horizontal, this Balkan nation is all about the great outdoors
It’s hard to believe there are parts of Europe that still feel wild, but the jagged mountains that run the entire length of Bosnia and Herzegovina mean there are plenty of wide-open spaces. It’s a prime destination for mountain biking down limestone peaks and whitewater rafting through craggy canyons. The capital city of Sarajevo hosted the Winter Olympics in 1984, so there are slopes in every direction. This country on the Balkan Peninsula barely has a sliver coastline—only the resort town of Neum actually touches the Adriatic Sea—but head a bit inland and you’ll pass medieval villages like Mostar, known for its sweeping stone bridge, hilltop fortresses like Ostrožac Castle, and one waterfall after another.
