“Spectacular setting”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed November 11, 2012

The lodgings are basic but comfortable and clean; as this is in rural Lesotho, one shouldn't have high expectations. However, we were pleasantly surprised with the panoramic view from the bedroom looking out on the dam; this alone makes up for any shortcomings. The staff (and all the people in Lesotho!) are such warm and friendly people and were always ready with a smile; the service was very satisfactory at all times. The manager spend not only the obligatory minute at our table but actually showed us his lovely indigenous rock garden outside the dining room; his enthusiasm about the country and its people was really touching. We had a dinner-bed-breakfast package and I can still not believe the variety the kitchen had on offer; at dinner the salmon trout was a real treat with very generous portions indeed. The breakfast boasted a good variety of fruits, yoghurt, cereals, cold meats and cheeses; add to that the farmhouse style warm dishes and excellent coffee and you're set for the road. There are no filling stations in Katse which necessitates careful planning.

We went as a goup of 6 people on a biking trip to Lesotho. We were there for 2 nights. The accomodation was functional and clean. They could upgrade a bit as it is an old building that needs some attention. The views are spectacular and the dining area was great. The food was good - breakfast was a good variety. We did a trip on the dam - lovely scenery. The manager was very friendly and helpful and the staff were also very pleasant. The mountain views riding up there were breathtaking - well worth the trip. Well worth a visit.

The location is unusual, but the views are truly spectacular once you get there. The lodge was originally accommodation for engineers building the Katse Dam. Unfortunately the hotel urgently needs investment in the bedrooms and bathrooms - everything was functional, but basic and dated. The beds were dreadfully soft and creaky - if I spent money on one thing, it would be new beds. Some rooms have to share bathrooms. We turned down the first room because someone had been smoking in there. Having said all that, it is probably the only hotel in the area and it is acceptable. The staff are doing the best they can on a limited budget. Food was fine. The Katse Dam tour is essential for all visitors and well recommended. This is a truly beautiful area and our holiday was truly unforgettable.

Room Tip: Check if you have to share a bathroom.

A gang of us stopped off here so we could see the Katse Dam, a marvel of engineering. This building used to be the accommodation block for the engineers etc when the dam was being built and while like being back at school, was perfectly adequate and any lack of luxury was made up for by the lovely views from the huge terrace. Our room in the annexe was a reasonable size with an unnecessary kitchenette left over from the old days, basic shared bathroom with no shower curtain, separate loo, single school beds that squeaked and crunched and a vast telly showing the usual endless sport. The terrace/deck was very big with lovely views and a nice beer out there was very welcome. Buffet supper, not stunning but perfectly OK and an OK buffet breakfast. Very friendly staff & a fascinating tour of the dam the next day. Worth a look if passing!

My husband and I and three friends and our guide stayed over at the Katse Lodge for one night. After a wet, slippery trip on rough roads it was such a pleasure to be greeted by their friendly staff. We had hired a self-catering house which is maintained and serviced by the Lodge. It was roomy and spotlessly clean. There was one bedroom en-suite. The other two bedrooms shared a bathroom. As our group consisted of 6 adults we could have done with another separate toilet. However, for a family the accommodation is superb. We ate at the Lodge that night. The food was excellent. Breakfast too is beautifully presented and exceptionally tasty. The service was very professional and Roy Martin, the General Manager, made sure that we were happy guests. If you are going to visit one of the most spectacular dams in Africa, if not the world, the Katse Lodge is certainly the place to stay.

Totally agree with the other reviewer - he couldn't have summed it up better. The rooms are sizeable, with enormous flat screen TV.......and one plug point! The large bath was very welcome as most other places we stayed didn't have that. Meal service was fine - breakfast was good and the evening meal pretty good considering where we were (this is quite a remote place). But it feels like a refurbished school! There's no particular reason for anyone to go to Katse but if you are doing a Lesotho tour as we did, the trip to (and INSIDE!) the dam,is pretty interesting and a total bargain at ZAR10 each.

Katse Lodge is probably the best place to stay if you're visiting the Katse Dam in Lesotho, one of its main tourist attractions. Built mainly to house the contractors who worked on the construction of the dam, it's a sort of low common denominator Holiday Inn - a very quiet one when we were there - but the magnificent view of the dame and surroundings make up for it. Rooms are comfortable and clean... get one outside the main building for peace and quiet. When we were there, their credit card machine was down so take some cash with (about $80 per night). It's a good place to use as a base to explore the region with. It's a totally unspoilt area (save for the dam of course).
