“Best stop in the Hawke's Bay region”
Reviewed June 6, 2013

This was our favorite stop during our visit to the Hawke's Bay region. It is not a fancy winery but the ambiance was perfect. The wines were very good and the tasting was fun and informative. Our party then settled in for a nice lunch. Though it was a little chilly and rainy the patio heaters were just right. The food was excellent and service friendly and efficient. We chose a couple of reds and a couple of whites to complement the meal and were not disappointed. Highly recommend a stop here.

“Great Boutique Winery, Passion Evident!”
Reviewed May 28, 2013

This was our last vineyard stop after having lunch just down the road at Elephant Hill. Had an amazing tasting experience with a very knowledgeable staff and they even had some older cellar wines open that were absolutely fantastic! Our purchased 1999 Malbec/Cabernet Franc blend was out of this world. We loved their "Red" late harvest wine. We will eat there next time. Overall, a passionate vineyard and you can tell! The place is abound with fruit trees and the smell of fresh nearby lavender, giving it a special feel.

“Casual dining in a relaxed, pretty setting”
Reviewed May 27, 2013

We are lucky enough to call Hawkes Bay our home. We have visited Clearview many times over the years - when out biking the trails and for relaxed special occasion lunches with several friends.
Great courtyard setting - cool in summer and warm in winter (they even have heaters for when the sea breeze turns cool - or the sun goes down). Welcoming and helpful wait staff, friendly cellar door tasting (within the restaurant) and a safe outdoor play area for when the kids get bored sitting at the table.
The wine is good and well-priced.
But - in our opinion, the quality of the food has dropped off over the past few months. We recently dined with friends. The breads and dips, to start, were wonderfully fresh and tasty. We especially liked the onion-stuffed focaccia. I had the pumpkin and chicken risotto for "main" - the vegetables and chicken were flavourful and melted into the rice. The steaks, though cooked to order, were tough and griselly. The roasted chipped vegetables were unappetising and the men in our group were still hungry after they'd finished. For dessert they had the rhubarb torte which was a bit stale and tasteless. Others liked the orange and almond cake but the brulee was sickly sweet - not to our taste.
We all thought that the steak main was way overpriced.
After lunch in the sun in the rustic setting you come away feeling relaxed. My advice: when you sit down to eat have a good look at what others around you are eating and go from there.

“Good Food, Nice Spot”
Reviewed May 27, 2013

My sister and I took my mother here for a postponed Mother's Day lunch. The restaurant is on a wine estate surrounded by vines and open paddocks. We were there on a Sunday and it was very busy including a few large parties. Service was a little slow but they were pretty rushed and the setting is so nice that a bit of a wait is not a downside. The wait staff were charming and helpful - also a bonus. The menu is quite small but well selected and the wine list is the same, mostly Clearview wines which is not a criticism. We had a particularly good chardonney that rounded things out nicely. My food and my sister's were very good. She had a risotto that was a taste sensation. The place is worth a visit just to sample that dish. My mother complained that her beef was tough. She is old and doesn't have much strength in her hands these days so it may have been a combination of less than tender beef and her lack of strength to cut it. She got tired and left most of the meat uneaten. She made up for it with a wonderful dessert of bitter orange cake and chocolate mousse that she polished off in minutes. Overall, it was a very positive experience and a lovely place to spend a sunny afternoon.
