“The best choice in Iruya”
Reviewed April 14, 2013

As in life, when visitng Iruya , the journey is much more beautiful than the destination itself.
The road (offroad, "ripio" and passing rivers without bridges) is absolutely wonderful. The first half it goes up until 4200 meters over the sea level and it goes down again until you finnaly reach Iruya.
Then town itself was a little bit disapointing to me. Fortunately the Hotel Iruya itself helps you to take distance from the town. Loacted at an higher en of the town you have a nice view from th e terrace, where you also can see the conderes overflying the valley. The common areas of the hotel are really first class, well decorated, with big spaces , nice living-room, bar and restaurant. The room sitself they ook a little bit simple and I think the adminsitration will have a challenge here , to invest in more comfortable rooms. hot water takes it time to reach your room , so be patient , it finnaly reaches your shower.. The service is really good specially from the higher level of the staff. The rest will still have to learn how to conduct with foreigners but the good will is there. We learned there that a new admisnitration just took over. Hopefully they will bring new energies and some investments in order to make out of this nice Hotel a place for a real exceptional stay. The basis is there.

You will be almost at the top of the mountain, in front of condor´s nest, magnificent sight, down the little town, the ancient church and the river...Is not easy to reach this little village that it seams to be hanging from the mountain, almost 3 hours by a winding road, you will reach 4000 mts before going down till the river. The hotel was very nice, with wonderfull terraces, good meals.

Room Tip: if you can, ask for the room wich is facing the town, beside the parking, it has two windows, one on...

Iruya is a wonderful place to visit and as others have said unless you're a backpacker this is the only place in town. And it's fine. Rooms decent, public spaces well designed, food ok, customer service also decent (eg they started breakfast 30 mins early as we had an early morning horse ride). All that said it's very unlikely to be the highlight of your trip. It has the air -in design and in feel - of a government-owned hotel: a little impersonal and lacking a sense of there being anyone involved on the ground with a stake ( I read on another review that it's owned by "outsiders"'and that makes complete sense.) And there's really nothing exceptional about it. But without it I suspect even fewer would make the journey to Iruya (which, for the record, is fine by non 4x4 outside of the Jan/Feb rainy season though it is indeed fairly bone shaking) and as long as you don't expect anything too special you'll be fine.'

The route to Iruya is beautiful and the road is not so bad. It took us 2,5 hours to reach Iruya with many stops for photos. The hotel is very nice on the top of the village. It has a nice atmosphere due to the elegant and modern decoration and furniture, which help to cover his age and also the fact that the materials are rather cheap. It is true that the staff is not as nice and warm as in other places, probably because they are not trained to. Dinner and breakfast were very good. Iruya is an authentic villa with no particular charm but in a wonderful and dramatic area. The people of the village are poor and not used to tourists. This makes the village somehow not very friendly. The hotel and its visitors are from another world.

Hotel Iruya is perched atop the village at the end of an extremely steep cobblestone road. The only thing further along the road is the cemetery. There's no English here. Perhaps you'll have some difficulty communicating - sign language works. Regional dialects are strong so high school Spanish is of little help. However you will be so relieved to have arrived alive after the drive through the mountains that you won't be a bit pertrubed by the lack of English. Just happy to have a beer. And more than happy to wake up to the spectacular mountain views from your room. Or to sit in the public areas of the hotel and enjoy the mountains and the valleys and the gorges.....it is all quite breathtaking.

The food is good here, as is the service. In fact the breakfast and morning coffee are a treat.

Be warned: There is no Tourist Office here. No computer for guests. No maps of the town. There is in fact little support for tourists. But somehow it all works. It is definitely the best place in town to stay and to eat.

this simple hotel is located in the top of the town, the view surrounded by mountains is great.
rooms are very simple, neat and clean, the dining room has a grand view and a terrace..Breakfst is also simple not abundant, although absolutely fresh.

Room Tip: try to get rooms from 1 to 8, the other ones in another sector of the hotel are not so good.
