“Dog Friendly”
Reviewed May 9, 2013

We have now stayed at this hotel twice a year for the past 6 years, when we where told that it was under new ownership we here a bit dubious but Jules the new owner gave us a warm welcome and we where at ease right away, the meals are very good and the accommodation is clean so much so that we have booked again for Dec. This hotel is dog friendly, look out for the special deals late in the season. The Pub has a guest house, cottage and rooms at the Salutation Inn, worth a visit just for the food and the warm welcome.

Room Tip: Rooms at the salutation inn are quieter that the main Horse and Farrier.

I recently stayed at the Horse & Farrier Inn for a short break. I cannot recommend it highly enough. The staff are so kind & welcoming, nothing is too much trouble. The rooms are very spacious & beautifully appointed. The food is superb, with a very extensive menu. All in all a great place to stay & explore the incredibly beautiful Lake District

We have been staying in a cottage in Threlkeld for the last three years, and have aways frequented the Horse & Farrier. This year was no exception and we found that it was under new management. They were very friendly and couldn't do enough for you and even invited us for coffee on the morning we were leaving even though we were not staying in the hotel. The food is excellent, staff very friendly a brilliant roaring fire and very dog friendly, which is a must for us. I would highly recommend to anyone and we are looking forward to going back in October for some more wonderful hospitality.

I am not one for writing reviews but on this occasion I decided I must make an exception and have signed up to trip advisor to let people know just how good this place is.

The inn is in a brilliant location only a few miles from Keswick but just off the a69 so really easy to find. The village of Threlkeld is very peaceful with stunning views over the surrounding fells. We checked it around 5pm and were greeted by the friendly staff and shown to our room in the guesthouse over the road. My first impressions of the inn were very good. It was not an average pub and was clear that a great deal of time and money had been spent on everything from the furnishings down to the smaller details to give it a really warm inviting feel. It has bucketloads of character and charm. I instantly felt relaxed in the surroundings and was happy with my choice.

The room was large with an enormous bed, tastefully decorated and with everything you could need. The views from the window over blencathra was an unexpected treat and the window was huge. I hadn't booked a table for dinner that evening so we returned to the restaurant to make a booking. It was already quite busy which told us it must have a good reputation. We weren't able to get a table until 8.30pm so my advice would be to call and book a table when you make the reservation as it is popular for a reason...

We had a drink in the guest house pub which was lively and welcoming and then sat in the elevated beer garden over the road at the horse and farrier. Despite the rain following us for most of the way, the sun decided to come out for the few hours before we ate which always lifts the spirits and we were able to take in the breath taking views over the surrounding fells and valleys.

By the time we were shown to our table there was a lovely atmosphere in the restaurant. Every table was taken with people smiling and laughing but despite it being busy it still felt intimate and romantic. With a candle on every table and other different types of lighting it had a cosy feel and I felt completely relaxed. I had the pork belly and my partner had the shoulder of lamb. Both were cooked to perfection and the portions were generous -we both said it was the best meal out we had eaten for a long, long time. Both dishes were mouth wateringly tasty. The service was great too the staff were attentive but not overbearing. We were made to feel at ease and like a personal guest rather than a paying customer. You could see that the staff were like a family and worked really hard to ensure that everyone was happy. We ended up having a few more drinks than we had planned and finished the night in the guesthouse bar with some really friendly people which meant that we didn't rise until 10am so missed breakfast. Despite this when I checked out the owner jooles offered to make us a packed lunch to take with us which was really lovely.

I want to say a huge thankyou to you all for making our weekend so memorable!

We spent two nights at the Horse and Farrier in April. What a lovely place! The location, under Blencathra, is beautiful and it was actually more spectacular because of the snow. We had some excellent walks from the Inn. The Inn itself has real character - like stepping back in time - with wood panelling, and truly wonderful food. The staff were really friendly and helpful. The room was comfortable with a lovely view across the valley. All in all, we found a real gem! We will go back!

Friendly, efficient service, average food and clean room.

The Horse and Farrier is a busy, popular pub / b&b catering for the coach loads of tourists that arrive in the Lakes....

It provided a comfortable bed after a long journey but I would not stay here again.

On arrival we were really well looked after by Jooles on Sunday morning then by Vicci, Nic and the entire team.

A warm welcome and nothing was too much trouble for us 4 walkers. One of the attractions of the stay was the ability to also go across to the sister pub across the road to enjoy some different ales and the typical pub settting too. So we had the best of all worlds!

Food and ale were good. Would recommend staying there.
