“Very friendly staff , lovely place”
Reviewed August 15, 2014

Just popped in for a beer after a long walk , they let me in with my very dirty springer spaniel and put me in quiet spot in corner. Must admit if I'd have known how nice inside I would not have gone in but they couldn't have made me more welcome.
Just had a pint or Peroni and bag of scampi fries , dear at 5.70 but I enjoyed all the less.
Saw other dogs walking through place so assume residents had dogs, a couple came in for early dinner and service and knowledge of food sounded good , will be back.

“Good Pub Grub”
Reviewed August 12, 2014

Very attractive and clean Pub. Friendly and courteous service.
Above average pub food.
Nice starters of seared scallops followed by sea bass fillets.
Good range of dishes on menu and also some specials available.
Would recommend booking as with most of the best lake district establishments.

“Great beer & grub.”
Reviewed August 11, 2014

Called in here for lunch before going for a walk. This is a beautiful old pub in a charming village and I have to say the the fish and chips I had were the nicest I have ever eaten. The pub has an excellent of beers and the Jennings Sneck-lifter was just perfect.

“Pituresque pub!”
Reviewed August 11, 2014

During a camping trip to Keswick (well, Burns Farm just up the road really) we decided to have a little wander on our first evening after pitching up and feeling like we deserved a beer, and the Horse and Farrier was what we found! What a little hidden Gem!! As soon as we walked into this country pub we knew that it was special, it was cosy and warm, busy but not overcrowded, and had beautiful lighting making areas and corners of the pub discreet and personal. There was a great selection of local ales on draught, and prices weren’t too steep (£3.40 for a pint of ale). The outside beer garden was well equipped with plenty of chairs and tables, and a covered area perfect for the unpredictable British summer.
As soon as we arrived we knew that we would be coming back to this place during our short stay in the Northern Lakes. We decided to treat ourselves on the last night of our camping trip, and booked in for an evening meal on a Wednesday night. It was a good job we booked – as even by 7pm all tables were either occupied or reserved – and we presumed that this was the case for every night during high summer season. A fantastic bonus point to make is that they allow dogs (well behaved and on a lead of course) so our little schnauzer was happy and comfortable sharing our table with us while we enjoyed our 3 courses. All in all it was a great find in a picturesque village in the foothills of Blencathra. A must for anyone to try, and we will certainly be recommending and returning ourselves.

“Disappointing food”
Reviewed August 7, 2014 via mobile

Having enjoyed lunches here in the past we looked forward to our meal here. But while the gammon/egg/chips dish was good, the smoked haddock and egg was let down by stodgy, dry mash - perhaps microwaved - and flavourless parsley sauce. Somewhat compensated by the pleasant surroundings and good beer, but we won't be going back to eat.
