As a committee member of The South Lakes Walking Club, it is without hesitation that I recommend the restaurant at The Horse and Farrier Hotel at Threlkeld.

Following a glorious day out in the mountains of the Lake District, our walking club members thoroughly enjoyed a wonderful evening meal at the hotel. The food, generally renowned for its quality lived up to its reputation. The service and attention we received from all the staff without exception, was excellent, not easy to achieve when serving fifty seven people on a busy Sunday evening in the height of Summer.

Great food with some excellent specials. Tables almost always booked from 7.30pm onwards so book up or go before 6pm. Lovely views outside of the hills

When we checked to reserve a table - they can get quite busy in the evening - we were surprised to be pleasantly asked if we had a dog. We were then pleased because the reason is they do allow dogs in certian parts of the pub but not others which is nice if you are dog owner and also nice if you have a bit of an aversion to dogs.

There is a good choice of food at a reasonable price and in good quantites and good Jennings beers. An average two courses would be just under about £20.

We do get the impression that the Horse and Farrier is well run. The standard of their bedroooms has a good reputation though we did not stay there and they do breakfasts for outsiders and filled baguettes all day until about 6.00pm. The village of Threlkeld has been bypassed by the A66 and is relatively quiet with a fabulous backdorp of Blencathra and a view over the valley to Clough Head and the start of the Helvellyn ridge.

We have eaten here several times over the years and have found it to be relaible evry time. Well done to the Horse and Farrier people.

Welcome, food choice, preparation, presentation, drinks choice (including fine wines), service standards and value for money are all clearly considered crucial by this excellent pub / restaurant. It is worth the little extra cost for the quality differential it delivers.

Picked by chance as we looked for a simple lunch we were delighted to be offered not just the standard pub food menu but a pensioners' special at £6.95. Delicious mussels and ciabatta, then raspberry cheesecake, were wonderful value. Charming atmosphere, well worth looking for just off the highway.
