Old and dirty on the outside, but clean on the inside

Review of Dusit Hotel
3.0 of 5 bubblesReviewed Sep 22, 2012
Dusit hotel is located in the city center of Sakon Nakhon, close to many small shops, markets and restaurants. The outside looks like some maintenance (paint job) has been delayed for some time, but inside a friendly staff is waiting, speaking fairly good English, in a nice atmosphere. The room we had was spacious, good shower in rather small (but big enough) bathroom. At night it is rather quiet as if most daily activities have gone extinct. Dusit also has a airport taxi service at 200 Baht per person. Breakfast was not ncluded on our agoda booking. We really enjoyed our stay at Dusit hotel and might opt for it again at any future visit to Sakon Nakhon.

Did not stay but looked at the rooms.

Did not understand what 'older part of town' (in one of the reviews) meant until we went to the area around Big C, near the MJ Majestic, where we did stay. The Dusit is an externally scruffy building in an area that seems of the same age, likely late 70's?

The public space and the rooms seem clean and comfortable if rather old fashioned. The lobby picture is rather flattering. We didn't stay because the rooms plus breakfast were more expensive that the MJ which is in a busier part of town near the night market.

It was a Sunday evening, but a friend who had stayed during the week confirmed our finding that most of the city, a conglomeration of 70's concrete was 'shuttered and devioud of activity after dark. The gaudy night market area near Big C was much busier and seems to have been responsible for the unfortunate demise of the original downtown area.

Room tip: 'superior rooms' were B60 more... but neither included breakfast @ B120

Sakon Nakhon is void of 4-5 star hotels. Dusit is one of the best 3 star accommodations in town (Majestic (MJ) being the other). The Dusit has the advantages of being a smaller, quieter, facility with a 'homey' atmosphere. It is also located in the older part of town and very accessible to many family run, local restaurants. Exploring this part of town is fascinating. The standard rooms are quite basic, but the deluxe rooms have nice decor and are very comfortable and well appointed. The beds are comfortable, bathrooms are clean, good A/C, free wi-fi, and the service staff are very friendly. The only minor complaint is that the wardrobe closets are small and awkward. Overall, a pleasant stay.

Stayed for 3 nights. Not much to do around the immediate area. Nice vegetarian restaurant one street east and north. Ask for "raan ahaan jai"

Economy Room was 400 baht per night. AirCon, wireless internet but flaky connection. Room was dark, dreary, but functional. Mosquitoes in the room. Swimming pool was inoperative. Staff was efficient and helpful. Price did not include breakfast. Did not find the hotel restaurant to be very appealing. Not much English spoken I believe, but speak Thai enough myself.

I think a slightly better bet is MJ Hotel, if you do not need internet.
